Detecting termites early can prevent extensive damage to your home's structure. Termites are often hidden, but they leave behind several telltale signs. Based on 35+ years of experience, here are the most common signs of a termite infestation:
- Mud tubes or shelter tubes: These pencil-thin tunnels, made of soil and termite saliva, are built by subterranean termites for protection and moisture. Look for them along foundations, walls, ceilings, or crawl spaces.
   Â
- Discarded wings: After swarming, termites shed their wings, leaving small piles near windows, doors, light fixtures, or entry points. These wings resemble fish scales and are a sign of a nearby colony.
    Â
- Swarmers (flying termites): Seeing winged pests indoors or around your property indicates an active infestation starting or expanding.
     Â
- Frass (termite droppings): Drywood termites produce pellet-like droppings that resemble sawdust or coffee grounds, often piled below infested wood.
     Â
- Hollow-sounding or damaged wood: Tap on wooden beams, floors, or furniture—if it sounds hollow or crumbles, termites may have eaten the interior. Look for visible mazes or galleries inside the wood.
    Â
- Buckling, blistering, or bubbling surfaces: Wood floors, ceilings, walls, or paint may warp, blister, or appear water-damaged due to termites tunneling beneath.
    Â
- Stuck doors or windows: Termite activity can cause wood to swell or warp, making doors and windows difficult to open or close.
